About Modern Rugged

Our beginnings
It started with four bags.
Modern Rugged didn’t begin with a business plan to build a leather brand.
It started with Jon, an Air Force veteran who built a gaming business after observing the need of fellow airmen. What began small eventually grew into Misty Mountain Gaming, traveling to conventions and building a community around gaming and dice.
Along the way, leather bags entered the picture.
At first, they were simply another product, just a handful of bags alongside everything else the company was doing. But something about them stood out. Customers responded to them, the team started using them, and Jon saw an opportunity worth exploring.
So he put together a team with backgrounds that included the Air Force, Army, and Marine Corps, along with experience in business, travel, and putting gear through real-world use.
Eventually, it became clear that these products deserved an identity of their own.
Modern Rugged was born.
Shaped by experience
Made to be carried.
They started asking a simple question:
What would we actually want to carry?
That question changed the direction of the business.
The team traveled with the bags, used them, listened to customers, studied what worked and what didn’t, and began developing a clearer standard for what the products should be.
Durable without looking tactical. Refined without being delicate. Functional without being overcomplicated.
Gear that could move just as comfortably through an airport, office, hotel, jobsite, or weekend away—and look better after years of use than it did the day it arrived.
What started with four leather bags has grown into collections built around the same idea: honest materials, purposeful design, dependable construction, and products meant to be used rather than protected from life.

We don’t believe the scratches, creases, and patina that come with use ruin a good leather bag.
They’re what make it yours.
Every trip leaves something behind. Every mile adds character. And over time, the things you carry become reminders of where you’ve been and what you’ve done.

We’re still traveling with our products. Still listening. Still improving them. And still asking the same question that started all of this:
Would we carry it ourselves?
If we wouldn’t, we won’t put the Modern Rugged name on it.
